TXT-A-Sketch, Brooklyn

This past summer I was enjoying some BBQ on my roof with the brilliant Cathy Shive and we brainstormed a mobile phone enabled drawing tool based on the txtual healing system. Finally, with the programming skills of Federico Hatoum we’ve now got a community drawing tool that creates lines and colors based on the SMS you send from your phone.

Send an SMS and the system turns pairs of letters into points, and then lines automatically connect the points. It’s an X & Y axis that plots out your SMS using the alphabet to make coordinates… Then the whole thing is projected onto a building facade.

The idea behind the piece is to see what common short phrases look like as line art and symbols. If we are tricked into going to war based on a few sound bytes and catch phrases, (ie. yellow cake, axis of evil, with us or against us.) what is stopping the public from shortening it’s communication into symbols of rally and protest (ie. the bat symbol).

Baltimore, Maryland

Part of the Contemporary Museum of Baltimore’s cell phone show I put the bubbles up in the town who’s aquarium I used to visit as a kid. I also realized that interactive public projecting in freezing weather is not the most fun. The beautiful Tracey braved it out and helped me forget about the cold… check out the show I have an installation piece in it.

TXT Bombing D.C.

Invited to D.C. by the Warehouse Theater for an election night show. The weather wasn’t cooperating, so we moved the bombing indoors. I was asking people to bomb their frustrations by writing them on the side of a bomb. Similar to these photos we see in the media… photo 1 , photo 2

Fear Fighter, Queens

Asking the question WHAT/WHO ARE YOU AFRAID OF? I sent the army to take care of your fears with guns blaz’n. Shoot first ask questions later is always the way to go, huh? I was invited by the Flux Factory as part of their down the street and around the corner art happening. Stefany set the whole thing to a killer soundtrack of death metal and Full Metal Jacket snippets. Annie Reichert popped some of the photos below.

Sacramento

Big thanks to Susie Kuo, the curator of the Sacramento State University of Cali’s campus gallery, for inviting me out to install One of You Will Betray Me. So of course we had to go out projecting, and she directed me to a nice dark spot on The Golden Bear. I thought it was going to be a bust, but then the lovely people of sacramento stepped up with some good dialogue… apparently the Maloof’s are trying to build a new stadium for the Kings basketball team. If you need an excellent dentist in Sacramento, look up Michael Wonnacott D.D.S.

San Francisco, The Mission

While in Cali putting up an installation piece at Sac State UC I took the opportunity to swing into San fran and put up some bubbles. I hooked up with friends Stacey, Christina and Brian. Stacey was a tropper, she drove me around The Mission til we found a nice little joint, The Latin Club. They hooked us up with electricity, and some willing patrons… it was a good night.
