The first set of photos were taken of Drip TXT projected on the front of the an old synagogue in town. The synagogue was the base for the indoor performances for the Stompan festival. Why a synagogue? Most Jews left the region due to the the atrocities inflicted by Hitler in WWII.
The next set are from projecting on the same downtown building from the 06.08 projection. This time the projection was cleared with the police at city hall.
After Bucharest I took a 9 hr overnight train ride up to the small town of Bistrita in The Transylvania region of Romania. On this first night the bubbles went up on a residential building in downtown. The cops eventually showed up and shut down the operation. There was some haggling, but the police didn’t know what to make of the projections, so they told us to shut down. This was the first time the police had shut me down. The police usually ask “how does that work?” Say “cool” and move on.
By the way, the Romanians I mixed with had excellent English. Uh, read below…
Landed that evening and immediately was put to work. With the help of Oana Felipov we threw up the first speech bubbles at the Street Delivery festival. If you are new to Drip TXT, it’s as simple as it sounds. I teamed up with Adam Chapman and digitally captured the graffiti writing skills of Jesus Saves to create an interactive public space installation where your text message is written out in the hand of NYC Graffiti Artist Jesus Saves… Check out the typeface that was created by Saves for the project
We Set up the projector on my roof and recorded some video and photos. We first projected on the wall on my roof, then we turned the projector and hit the Gowanus housing projects from my roof. The video doesn’t begin to capture how nice it was.
Working with Adam Chapman, it’s now possible to write like the pros from the comfort of your own mobile phone. Send a text message and watch it spelled out in the writing style of Jesus Saves.
We went down to Redhook with Seth, Jeanna, and Soren and projected on the Grain Storage building. Using my 3500 Lumen projector and a generator we set up in a baseball field of the Redhook Playing Fields.
Night 4. The cherry on top… Not sure if we’d be able to see the projection, Fabio arranged electricity from a restaurant across the street from the Colloseum and we threw a bubble up. Besides the bus pulling up and ‘beamer blocking’ about every 15 minutes the bubble was legible from about 50 yards away and through street lights. I was using a 3500 Lumens projector.
At the end of the night I took all the messages received and ran them through TXT-A-Sketch to create a line art interpretation of all the messages received… pics below.
Night 3. After a delicious dinner, I set up 2 projections at Rialto for the Urban Portraits show. I projected the Last Supper on the side window onto the building next door, and set up the Fear Fighter in the pub area.
Night 2. Fabio and I hit the famous tourist hot spot Campo De Fiori. Using electricity from a local restaurant we projected onto a building used by american students studying in Rome. We also hit some of the back alleys of the area.
Night 1. I was invited to Rome by Fabio Compagna as part of the Rialto Santambrogio Urban Portraits show. Fabio and I hit the streets running, throwing up the first bubbles in the St. Lorenzo area of Rome. At first people didn’t know what to make of the projections, but it didn’t take long for the cell phones to come out and then the content began to flow. About half way through we had a bit of a ‘to do’ about postings for favorite football clubs being touted in the bubbles.
